Chris Barber's Jazz Band using the lovely Otillie Patterson on vocals brought the sound of New Orleans to British traditional Jazz buffs during the late fifties and early sixties. This was only the start of a wave of new sounds that culminated with what came to be known as the British Blues Boom!

On Banjo was the great Lonnie Donegan who was crowned the Godfather of Skiffle a year or two later. All of the early musical melting pots had been springboards for the following generation of music artists and within several years the music world was to change forever.

My first exposure to the Blues was on Barber's wonderful LP New Orleans Joys. I forget all of the titles now, but the haunting music stirred up unexpected sensations and led me several years later to a lifelong passion for the Blues as I'm confident it did with lots of young kids at the time.

The band that I think was the turning point at this moment was definitely the Yardbirds, whose extraordinary energy and commitment had been totally unparalleled on stage.

My first encounter this Juggernaut had been on a Monday morning in school. Some buddies told me about this amazing band that they had watched at the Marquee that had a guitarist that was simply just outstanding.

The year was 1963, the man in question (well he was just 18 years old!) was Eric Clapton.

The legend was underway during this period and I believe Eric was accountable for the enormous interest brewing within the Blues in Britain as the Yardbirds became household names on the R & B circuit.

A lot of guitars were sold at that time as Young Bloods attempted to imitate Clapton, some with success and several without.

Probably one reason for the increase in guitar bands instead of wishy-washy pop sounds of the time was the discovery of the practically forgotten Gibson Les Paul which made the sound closest to the Chicago Blues several years earlier.

Eric's use of this specific instrument took the Blues to a new elevation and no-one could evade the flood that was on the way.

With the Yardbirds, there seemed to be a mix of Gibson and Fender guitars in use. Eric initially played a Fender Telecaster along with rhythm guitarist Chris Dreja using the Gibson 335, but the favorite in many years to come especially in '65 and '66 was the Les Paul.

There's a rock band music list of artists that use this marvelous instrument. To listen to their free rock music, look up: rock music new.
