The Beginning
Growing up in the East Bay region of Northern California, childhood buddies Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt had been often in love with the punk rock music scene.
They would endlessly play records together from scores of bands, but one frequent thread existed amongst all their selections - punk rock was the rage, and the faster the band, the more these 2 future rockers enjoyed the sound.
The pair established their very own band in 1986 when each was 14 years old, and they even got their first gig in 1989 at Rod's Hickory Pit in Vallejo, California, where Armstrong's mother worked.
During the time, the band was referred to as Sweet Children, and they basically enjoyed a modicum of success in spite of their economic and representative restrictions.
Later in 1989, Al Sobrante became a member of the band, and they renamed themselves Green Day in reference to puffing marijuana all day long. As a result of Sobrante's in-school connections, Green Day swiftly got their first live gig at Contra Costa College, exactly where Sobrante was a student.
Their exclusive sound was immediately recognizable, and Green Day soon gathered a loyal local following. Their rock music festival shows were also intense and extremely enthusiastic, and Green Day tickets easily became a popular item in California.
Album Success
The group released several albums on smaller independent labels, and although they did not attain commercial success, they did get the group noticed by the "big boys" within the record business, and Green Day ultimately signed with Reprise Records, setting the stage for their achievement.
